The pure BaTi17040 and BaTi14Nb2039 powders were both synthesized at 1200°C for 2 hours using starting powder mixtures with stoichiometric compositions, and their pellets were prepared with the same method described above except that they were sintered at 1330°C for 2 hours. 5 mm in thickness and terminated with Ag electrodes at 700°C for 10 minutes if their electrical properties were to be measured. The X7R powder (X7R 422H) used in the study was provided by Ferro. The samples used in this study are listed in Table I.

The type of milling did not affect the rate of conversion to the tetragonal phase. The presence of both phases is thought to reflect local compositional fluctuations. Examination of the PbZrO3-PbTiO3phase diagram shows that the rhombohedra1 phase occurs in the 38 Zr-rich region and the tetragonal phase occurs on the Ti-rich side of the morphotropic phase boundary.

Elastic waves are running through the whole body and lead to oscillations. The largest stress amplitudes are found in the centre of the cylinder. In Fig. a [6], the stress oscillations for a typical test pulse, which leads to a temperature increase of 120 "C are shown (one dimensional analysis: dashed line: three-dimensional model: solid line). In the three dimensional case the reflections of the initial compressive wave at different surfaces of the cylinder lead to a complicated interference pattern in the component.
